I could have been...

So, music is, like my Harrison Ford impression, a funny thing. I was just listening to "One Of These Things First" by Nick Drake, and it was quite startling how quickly I reverted back to the first time I heard the song probably three and a half years ago. Now I couldn't tell you the day of the week or what I was wearing, but I can remember what my surroundings were and how it made me feel. I can picture it so clearly that, for a moment, I feel like I am junior in high school again. Of course, this is not the only song that evokes such a clear image, "Highways Of The Sun" by Camel paints an intricate image of driving up the 101 and a longing for adventure and searching for self acceptance. It is quite amazing how powerful a simple song can prove to be to an individual.
I have found that this can be both positive and negative. One one hand, it can evoke pleasant memories that can deliver a much needed smile to your face. On the other, it can be nearly impossible to escape the past that is relentlessly thrust upon you by a simple guitar figure. This is obviously a major reason that all people enjoy music differently, because no matter what your favorite band is, a song you haven't heard in years, that you may not even like, can be far more important or influential.
